A U.S. judge says the Trump administration could face consequences if it violates a court order temporarily blocking the deportation of hundreds of Venezuelan migrants.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, based in Washington, issued the statement Wednesday, while granting the government more time to explain the deportations.

Boasberg said the government could choose to invoke the state secrets doctrine, which protects sensitive national security information from disclosure in civil litigation, and explain why it is doing so, rather than providing details about the deportation flights.

The judge expressed skepticism that compliance with the order would endanger national security, citing a post on X by Secretary of State Marco Rubio that detailed the flights.

His order marked a temporary truce in a growing dispute with the Trump administration.

Recall that Trump called for Boasberg’s impeachment on Tuesday, prompting an unusual rebuke from Chief Justice John Roberts.

violates the deportation order

Boasberg, appointed to the federal judgeship by Democratic President Barack Obama, is seeking to determine whether the administration violated an order issued over the weekend, blocking the deportation of hundreds of alleged Venezuelan gang members under an 18th-century law.

Following the order, three planes carrying deported Venezuelans landed in El Salvador, where they are being held.

Boasberg has asked for details on the takeoff and landing times of the first two planes, saying that information would not be made public.

In response, the Trump administration accused him of overstepping his authority. “The pending issues constitute serious intrusions into fundamental aspects of the absolute and unreviewable authority of the executive branch,” the Trump administration wrote in a court filing Wednesday.

Boasberg, however, responded by extending the government’s deadline.
