The United States will expel more students for participating in pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday.
The students participated in last spring’s protest against Israel following its military operation in Gaza, an action harshly criticized by President Donald Trump.
On Saturday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Palestinian graduate student Mahmoud Khalil. Authorities arrested another student after a third chose to expel themselves.
Speaking to reporters at a G7 summit in Canada, Rubio said that students facing deportation would be denied visas if they declared their support for human rights.
Rubio described Hamas as a “murderous, barbaric” organization and said anyone who attends universities in the United States and “revolutions” will go unpunished.
The secretary condemned the U.S. government for its anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic activities, school closures and disruptions of public order.
He added that despite the high cost of schools, some students were afraid to go to class because of “masked lunatics screaming scary things.”
Rubio said the deportation issue was not about free speech, but rather “people who have no right to be in the United States in the first place.”
“When you come to the United States as a visitor, which is what a visa means, you are here as a visitor; we can deny you a visa,” he said.
The secretary also said that if someone gets a green card on a student visa and engages in anti-Semitic acts, “we will deport them.”
“No one is entitled to a student visa or a green card,” Rubio stressed. “When you apply for a student visa or any other visa to come into the United States, we have the right to deny you that for any reason.”
